If you are around Fréjus in mid-January or Saint Tropez from May 16th to 18th, don’t be surprised to see squadrons of “toy” soldiers, looking like they’ve just stepped out of an operetta, forming up to let off noisy musket volleys in the public squares. The bravades, a local tradition, recalls the region’s earlier, warring history. Nowadays, musketeers honor the towns’ patron saints by loudly demonstrating how they held off hordes of Saracens and Barbary pirates in the old days.
